Tangut character for warm

410/6136

𗆙 means “warm” in Tangut, the language written in the historical Tangut script. Its three-part construction combines the ideas “not,” “hot,” and “cold.” Outside a Tangut text, explain it rather than assuming a reader will take it as a message about warmth.

What 𗆙 means

In Tangut, 𗆙 means “warm.”

A documented analysis treats it as a three-character semantic compound: “not,” “hot,” and “cold” together make “warm.” This is a meaning-based construction, not a pronunciation key. In a Tangut sentence, read it with the surrounding words.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It was commissioned for the Western Xia state.

The Tangut script was commissioned for the Western Xia, a kingdom in northwestern China, around 1036–1037. Accounts differ about its designers: one credits Yeli Renrong and a group of scholars; another names a teacher called Iri. The script drew on Chinese and Khitan models but wrote Tangut, so a familiar-looking form does not make 𗆙 a Chinese character.

Tangut writing served government documents, dictionaries, Buddhist translations, legal texts and other books. Most surviving manuscripts date from the mid-11th to early 13th centuries; the latest known inscription is dated 1502. As of 2026, the script appears chiefly in historical study, not everyday writing.

How do I type 𗆙?

A Tangut-specific input method can produce it.

A Rime input method—a customizable keyboard system—such as Xunpin accepts reconstructed Latin-letter input, tone marks, strokes, or the four-corner method, which identifies a character by stroke shapes at its corners. These are specialist layouts, not an ordinary keyboard route.

Historical and scholarly in tone; outside Tangut writing, it can read as a niche-script reference.

If the recipient does not read Tangut, “warm” will not be obvious from this glyph alone.
