What 𗇆 means
No English translation appears in the Tangut entry as of 2026-10-08.
Specialist records preserve several reconstructed pronunciations; they are attempts to recover how the character was read, not English translations. It is recorded in the 12th-century Wénhǎi (“Sea of Writing”), a Tangut dictionary, and Tóngyīn (“Homophones”), a work grouping words by sound.
Why does 𗇆 look Chinese?
Tangut is a distinct historical script for the Tangut language.
Created around 1036 CE under the first Western Xia emperor to write Tangut, the script appears in official, private, and religious texts, including Buddhist sutras, inscriptions, and manuscripts. It continued through the Yuan and Ming dynasties and became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.
Tangut can look Chinese-like, and Chinese writing influenced its design, but Tangut characters are not direct descendants of Chinese characters or of the Khitan script, another historical writing system in East Asia.
What does 𗇆 mean if someone sends it?
A lone message needs its Tangut source.
Ask which word or passage it came from; the character by itself cannot tell you why it was sent.
Historical and specialist; interpret it through the surrounding Tangut text.
Don't infer a Chinese reading or an English translation from its strokes.

1Why does 𗇆 show as a box?
Because the selected font lacks Tangut coverage and cannot draw it. Use a font that includes Tangut characters; changing fonts changes the visible design, not the encoded character.
