What 𗈁 means
It means “compassion” in reconstructed Tangut. Scholars transcribe its reconstructed reading as nvu¹. Here, “reconstructed” means the word and sound are inferred from surviving texts.
The Tangut script was created in the 11th century for the Western Xia state, where it served government writing and translations, including Buddhist works. The earliest surviving document is dated 1072; an early stele—an upright inscribed stone—dates to 1094. Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227; a 1502 inscription records later use.
Tangut characters are built from components, and the script was influenced by Chinese writing while remaining distinct. Scholars also compare it with Khitan, another writing system used in medieval East Asia.

1Why does 𗈁 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
