What 𗈘 means
Do not carry the compound’s gloss over to one character.
A Tangut manuscript tradition associated with a colophon—a note at the end of a manuscript—dated 1188 records 𗈘𗶍 as a word glossed “demon.” That is evidence for the two-character word, not a secure English translation of 𗈘 alone.
Around 1036, the Tangut-led Western Xia state commissioned Tangut writing for official and cultural work. Schools taught it, officials used it, and Buddhist works were translated and printed from carved blocks in Tangut. The state fell in 1227, ending that state setting; manuscripts and inscriptions preserve the writing tradition.
Is 𗈘 a Chinese character?
It belongs to Tangut, a separate script shaped partly by Chinese writing.
Tangut characters share visual and brush-stroke conventions with Chinese writing, but the writing system records Tangut rather than Mandarin Chinese.
How can I type 𗈘?
Use a Tangut input method.
BabelPad offers Tangut stroke-code or scholarly phonetic entry. Xunpin, a Tangut scheme for the Rime input framework, accepts reconstructed phonetic spelling, strokes, or four-corner codes, which identify forms at a character’s corners.
As of 2026, an app or browser without a Tangut font may show a fallback box. A web font may supply the glyph in a browser; other apps may need a system font.
Historical and scholarly; it belongs to the Tangut writing tradition.
The “demon” gloss belongs to 𗈘𗶍, not 𗈘 alone.
