Tangut Component 028

28/768

𘠛 is Tangut component 028, a structural part used to build and index full Tangut characters, not a standalone word with one translation. Sent alone, it serves as a component sample or technical reference.

What 𘠛 means

By itself, it has no single word translation.

Under Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao, Tangut writing emerged in 1036 to record the Tangut language. It served state-building; preparing a Tangut Buddhist canon, a collection of Buddhist scriptures, was a major purpose. The neighboring Khitan already had scripts, and Tangut drew on Chinese writing principles while remaining distinct. It appeared in official, private, religious, and Chinese-to-Tangut translated texts. A surviving manuscript from Khara-khoto, a ruined settlement, probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Tangut writing continued through Yuan and Ming rule, becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.

Component-028 is a modern catalog label for a structural part, not a word. Tangut dictionaries use components and stroke order to group and analyze full characters; the same component can appear in characters with different readings. Tangut writing drew on Chinese principles but is a separate script, so 𘠛 is not a Chinese character or a Chinese radical.

What does it mean when someone sends 𘠛?

Usually, it is a specimen or technical label, not a message.

A standalone send gives you no word, sentence, or fixed pronunciation to decode. Treat it as a sample of Tangut writing or a reference to a component; ask whether they mean the component, a dictionary index entry, or a full character that contains it.

Historical Tangut sources and fonts can draw this component differently. Unicode unified some source shapes when they did not distinguish characters in their original sources. Without a Tangut-capable font, it may appear as a missing-glyph box.

Technical and scholarly, with a font-dependent display; expect it in Tangut references rather than everyday conversation.

A lone send is a component sample, not a complete Tangut word.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘠛 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
