What 𗉁 means
As of 2026, its English gloss is unsettled.
𗉁 belongs to Tangut, the language used by the Tangut people in the medieval Western Xia state. A reconstructed reading is a scholarly estimate of a character's sound, not an English translation.
It appears in the Sea of Writing, a Tangut rhyming dictionary from the 12th century. The entry places it in a historical lexicon, where characters are organized by rhyme.
Why was Tangut writing made?
It was developed for Tangut state writing and Buddhist texts.
The script's creation is dated to 1036, two years before the Western Xia state was founded in 1038. It uses Chinese-style strokes to write the Tangut language and served state administration, translation, and Buddhist literature.
Tangut writing continued beyond the Western Xia period: surviving Buddhist inscriptions are dated 1502. They show the script's later use in Buddhist settings.
How do I type 𗉁?
Use a Unicode-aware editor; display needs a Tangut-capable font.
The editor inserts Unicode text; a font draws its strokes. If you see a missing-character box, the text may still be present—the font may lack Tangut support.
Keyboard and editor shortcuts differ by device, so use the editor's Unicode insertion method. Substituting a Chinese character would insert a different character.
