What 𗉪 means
A Tangut dictionary glosses it as a kind of vegetable. Li Fanwen’s Tangut–Chinese dictionary index, which pairs Tangut entries with Chinese explanations, lists 𗉪 as entry 1619 but does not name the species. Unicode’s generated name labels the code point; it does not tell you how to read the character.
The Tangut script was developed around 1036–1037 for Western Xia’s official and cultural writing, including government records, Buddhist translation, and printing. It wrote the distinct Tangut language with character forms resembling Chinese writing. Khitan and Jurchen scripts belong to the same regional era of script creation, but they are separate writing systems.
Western Xia fell in 1227. The extinct Tangut language is studied through surviving manuscripts, printed texts, inscriptions, and dictionaries. As of 2026, Unicode’s label L2008-1409 identifies a dictionary source, not a first-attestation date; it does not establish when this exact character first appeared. Treat the vegetable gloss as a dictionary reading in Tangut context, not as a general modern symbol meaning.
