What π—ŠŽ means

Its reconstructed sound is not an English translation.

Researchers reconstruct a Tangut pronunciation and write it as *dowΒ². That notation gives a proposed sound, not an English gloss; a Tangut sentence or specialist dictionary helps identify the word’s meaning.

The Western Xia state used the Tangut language and created its script in 1036 for administration, literature and Buddhist translation. The earliest transmitted example identified in scholarship is an official military document from 1072. The script remained distinct from Chinese writing while drawing on Chinese principles and earlier official scripts of the Khitan, another people with their own states and scripts. After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued in Buddhist and other texts; a documented inscription dates to 1502. Small stroke details distinguish similar characters, and some historically styled fonts show forms absent from surviving texts.

Questions people ask

1

Why does π—ŠŽ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
