Tangut character for pearl

𗊏 means “pearl” in Tangut, the language of the Western Xia state. It appears in dictionaries and Buddhist writing, and in “Pearl Star,” a name for Ketu in Indian astrology. Its square, Chinese-influenced look can mislead: Tangut is a different script for a different language.

What 𗊏 means

𗊏 means “pearl” in Tangut.

A Tangut dictionary glosses it as “pearl.” In a phrase, start with that meaning; a neighboring character can narrow it to a particular object or image.

Why was the Tangut script made?

It gave the Western Xia state a written language of its own.

Tangut writing was devised under the first Western Xia emperor about 1036. The project served state-building: it recorded the Tangut language, supported translations, and helped distinguish the kingdom’s identity from Song China. It was also tied to the goal of producing a collection of Buddhist texts in Tangut.

𗊏 appears in the 12th-century text Homophones and the 1190 bilingual wordbook Pearl in the Palm. After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued, especially in Buddhist texts, before becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.

How does its meaning change in context?

The gloss stays “pearl”; a compound changes what it names.

𗊏𗵫 names Ketu as the “Pearl Star” in Indian astrology; 𗊏𘏨 describes a precious pearl in Buddhist ritual writing.

The Tangut rulers had a regional precedent: the Khitan, a neighboring people, had created two scripts about a century earlier. Tangut drew on Chinese-influenced visual and compositional principles, but it records a different language, so its characters are not interchangeable with Chinese characters.

Outside Tangut text, it reads as a specialist historical character, not an everyday gem symbol.
