What 𗋍 means
A Tangut–Chinese index links it to Chinese 沾.
Chinese 沾 means touch, wet, or stain; tswụ is the Tangut entry’s scholarly reconstructed reading. The gloss aids translation; 𗋍 is not a Chinese substitute.
Unicode’s algorithmic Tangut name identifies the character; dictionary scholarship supplies its reading and gloss.
Why did Western Xia create Tangut writing?
It served state records, identity, and Buddhist translation.
Around 1036–37, Li Yuanhao established Tangut writing; official Yeli Renrong organized and taught it. It served Western Xia records and a Tangut state identity. Chinese writing continued alongside it; Tangut followed neighboring Khitan scripts and adapted Chinese character principles.
The earliest surviving Tangut document is an official text dated 1072; Buddhist, administrative, and translated works continued after Western Xia fell.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𗋍 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
