What 𗋶 means
It marks sound in a specialized Tangut transcription.
A 2025 glyph review records 𗋶 as a phonetic-transcription character in four manuscript versions of Wuyin Qieyun, a Tangut reference work on sounds and rhyme groups. Three versions use this form; the fourth uses the standard form.
Why was Tangut writing made?
It served Western Xia’s official and cultural life.
Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered Tangut writing in 1036 as part of building Western Xia. It served official and cultural needs, including a Buddhist canon in Tangut—a collection of Buddhist scriptures—and supported an identity distinct from Song China.
Its forms drew inspiration from Chinese writing, but Tangut was a separate script that developed alongside the Khitan state scripts. Later books included Buddhist works translated from Chinese and Tibetan, as well as military and literary texts.
Scholarly and archival; its documented role is specialized sound notation in a Tangut reference tradition.
