Tangut character for lake

807/6136

𗌦 is a Tangut character glossed “lake,” with a reconstructed reading transcribed pho in scholarly Latin notation. It belongs to historical Tangut writing; sent alone today, it needs context because its documented meaning depends on reading a Tangut text. Its written analysis links it to a water element, a circle character and a third component.

What 𗌦 means

Its Tangut gloss is “lake.”

Linguists reconstruct its Tangut reading as pho and gloss it “lake.” Pho is scholarly Latin transcription, not a guide to English pronunciation. The Unicode label identifies the character; it does not translate it.

The Tangut script was commissioned in 1036 by Emperor Li Yuanhao as part of building a distinct Tangut state. It carried a Buddhist canon, translations from Chinese and Tibetan, Confucian and military works, and literature. After the empire’s 13th-century collapse, it ceased to be a daily writing system. A Khara-Khoto manuscript fragment, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, shows the script in later use; it does not date this individual character.

Why does 𗌦 show as a box?

A missing Tangut font can leave an empty box.

As of September 2026, Tangut IME Online reports that some mobile apps fail to render Tangut text even when a computer with a Tangut font can display it. Its Noto Serif Tangut and Tangut Yinchuan fallback fonts differ in style.

How do I type 𗌦?

A Tangut input method can enter it by lookup, handwriting, or code.

Tangut IME Online supports reverse lookup, handwriting, and code input with a loaded RIME dictionary, the word list that supplies character entries. Search by the reconstructed reading or the character, then select the matching entry.

Scholarly, archival, or decorative; it signals interest in Tangut writing.

Alone, it may not convey a clear message to someone who cannot read Tangut.

1

Why does 𗌦 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
