Tangut character 𗍺

891/6136

𗍺 is a Tangut character glossed as “ceremony.” It appears in dictionaries and Buddhist texts; the documented phrase 𗍺𘃪 is glossed “end of ceremony.” Scholars reconstruct its pronunciation in more than one way.

What 𗍺 means

Its best-supported English gloss is “ceremony.”

The 12th-century Tangut rhyming dictionary Sea of Characters includes the glyph; a Tangut catalog gives that gloss. A rhyming dictionary groups entries partly by sound, so this is evidence from a historical reference work.

Is 𗍺 Chinese?

No. It is Tangut, from a script modeled on Chinese writing.

𗍺 writes a Tangut word, not a Chinese reading. The Tangut script was promulgated in 1036 for writing in the Western Xia state; its forms drew on Chinese character writing.

Tangut writing appears in Buddhist scriptures, translations, dictionaries, and other texts. Documented use of the script reaches 1502, beyond the Western Xia period.

How is 𗍺 pronounced?

Scholars reconstruct its reading as cha or tśja.

Tibetan phonetic notes write tśja and relate it to Tibetan sound spellings; another Tangut catalog gives cha. The opening of tśja suggests a sound roughly like the “ch” in “church,” followed by a brief y-glide and “a”—an approximate guide, not a confirmed modern pronunciation.

A specialist Tangut character; give it a gloss or surrounding text if you use it in a modern message.

Its Chinese-like shape does not make it a Chinese character.

Why does 𗍺 appear as a box?

A box means the selected font or text renderer lacks a Tangut glyph for this character. Use a font with Tangut coverage; the text can still be present even when the font draws a box.
