What 𗎄 means

A reconstructed reading alone cannot settle its meaning.

A reconstructed reading estimates its sound, not its definition. Without the surrounding Tangut word or passage, translating it would be guesswork.

How did Tangut writing begin?

In 1036, Western Xia rulers commissioned Tangut writing for Buddhist texts and the kingdom's identity. It drew on Chinese writing and earlier Khitan script projects but recorded the distinct Tangut language.

Surviving texts from the 12th and early 13th centuries include Chinese translations, Confucian writings, military manuals and literature. After the Mongol conquest in the 13th century, daily use faded and Tangut became a subject of scholarship.
