Tangut Component-050

50/768

𘠱 is a Tangut component: a catalogued part used to describe and index full Tangut characters, not a word with a dependable standalone translation. Tangut script was created around 1036 for the Western Xia state's administration and Buddhist work; surviving manuscripts date to the 12th or early 13th century.

Text symbol

What 𘠱 means

It is a catalog label for a part of Tangut writing. Scholars use Tangut components to sort and describe full characters. “050” is an inventory number, not a meaning or pronunciation, so this isolated sign has no dependable reading as a word.

Western Xia (Xixia) used Tangut for government, Buddhist translation, and to mark cultural distinction from Song China. The script drew on Chinese writing traditions and scripts used by the neighboring Khitan people, yet recorded the distinct Tangut language. Surviving material includes official writing, Buddhist translations, and printed Buddhist books.

If it appears as an empty box, your font lacks Tangut coverage. A font with Tangut support can render the same text character; the missing shape does not identify a different component.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘠱 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut Components block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
