Tangut Component-049

49/768

𘠰 marks one part in the Tangut component index, not a complete written word. Its structural role is read within a whole character. Tangut writing also carried official, private, and religious texts.

Text symbol

What 𘠰 means

It identifies one piece of a full Tangut character. The component set lets readers index and analyze recurring parts. Within a whole character, components may contribute meaning or sound; the number alone does not tell you this part’s role.

Is Tangut related to Chinese or Khitan?

Tangut is distinct, though Chinese and Khitan traditions influenced it. Western Xia commissioned the Tangut script around 1036 CE for the Tangut language. Historians link the project to Buddhist translation and a distinct state identity from Song China. Tangut forms drew on Chinese writing and the scripts of neighboring Khitan people, but Tangut writing is its own system.

Use continued under the Yuan and Ming dynasties after Western Xia fell. Tangut became obsolete by the end of the Ming and was rediscovered in the late nineteenth century. The 12th-century dictionary Sea of Characters analyzes full characters through components.

Why does 𘠰 appear as a box?

A font without Tangut glyph coverage may show a missing-character box; fonts also differ in how they draw Tangut forms. The box signals a display gap, not a different symbol.
