What 𗎖 means
A Tangut dictionary glosses it as “bitter.”
Li Fanwen’s dictionary lists entry L4046 as “bitter” and reconstructs its reading as khie (also khe), scholarly Latin-letter transcriptions.
Why was Tangut writing created?
Western Xia commissioned it for state use. Tangut was the state’s language; the script, created in 1036, served government writing and translation.
Tangut texts survive in secular manuscripts and later Buddhist writings.
