Tangut character 173BF

960/6136

𗎿 is a Tangut character, but its Unicode label does not tell you what word or idea it represents. Tangut writing served the Western Xia state and carried Buddhist texts. On screen, a missing Tangut font can leave it as a box.

What 𗎿 means

Its Unicode label identifies it; it does not translate it. In Li Fanwen’s Tangut–Chinese dictionary, this character is indexed as L2008-2442; the number is a lookup key, not an English gloss. To find its reading or meaning, consult a Tangut dictionary and the text around it.

The script was created in 1036 for the official and cultural needs of Western Xia, the Tangut state in what is now northwestern China. It appeared in government documents, schools, and printed translations of Chinese and Tibetan Buddhist works. After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued in Buddhist texts. The latest known example is a pair of Buddhist dhāraṇī pillars—stone monuments bearing a ritual text—erected in 1502. Its role shifted from state administration to religious preservation.

Tangut belonged to a Chinese-influenced regional writing tradition that also included Khitan and Jurchen scripts, used for other historical languages. The resemblance to Chinese writing does not make the scripts interchangeable: Chinese readers cannot read Tangut from the shapes alone.

How can I type 𗎿?

If your system supports Unicode hex input, enter 173BF. Exact keystrokes depend on the app or operating system. Display is separate: install or select a font that includes Tangut. In a browser setup without coverage, 𗎿 may appear as an empty box or fallback mark.

A Tangut-aware dictionary supplies linguistic information; a font only draws the character. The lookup and display problems are separate.

Historical and specialist: at home in Tangut texts, scholarship, or font testing.

A Chinese-looking shape does not make Tangut readable as Chinese.
