tangut ideograph-173db

Tangut character 173DB

988/6136

𗏛 is a Tangut character glossed as “auspicious.” If it arrives alone, the gloss gives you a possible reading, not the sender’s reason; the script belongs to the historical Western Xia state and Buddhist texts.

Text symbol

What 𗏛 means

Tangut dictionaries gloss it as “auspicious.”

That gloss is a starting point, not a whole message: the surrounding Tangut text helps show the character’s role.

Why was Tangut script created?

It served Western Xia state-building and Buddhist writing.

The script was created in 1036, remained in use after the Mongol conquest, and survives in examples as late as 1502, including scriptures and manuscripts.

A historical, specialist character; its dictionary gloss needs surrounding text.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗏛 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
