What 𗏷 means
A coffin or casket.
A Tangut dictionary records it as a noun.
Why was Tangut writing created?
For state-building and Buddhist texts.
Tangut emperor Li Yuanhao ordered Tangut writing in 1036 for Western Xia state-building and Buddhist texts. It followed neighboring Khitan examples and drew on Chinese forms without deriving from Chinese; it marked a distinct identity from Song China.
Tangut texts included Buddhist scripture, original writing, secular works and translations from Chinese and Tibetan. A Khara-khoto fragment, likely from the 12th or early 13th century, translates a Chinese account of an emperor and his ministers.
