What 𗐇 means
It means something crude, shabby, or lowly.
A Tangut dictionary records the reconstructed reading lhoq and gives the Chinese gloss 陋, roughly “shabby” or “lowly.” The gloss describes something crude, low-ranking, or poorly made.
On its own, 𗐇 gives modern readers little clue to that sense. In a Tangut quotation, read it with its sentence; outside one, add a plain-language gloss when the meaning matters.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It gave the Western Xia kingdom a way to write Tangut.
Created around 1036 under Western Xia's first emperor, the Tangut script let the kingdom write the Tangut language. It served official and cultural life in government and private records, Buddhist texts, inscriptions, and manuscripts.
After Western Xia fell, Tangut writing continued under Yuan and Ming rule. It had become obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty; scholars rediscovered it in the late nineteenth century and largely deciphered it during the early twentieth century.
A historical writing-system character with a negative dictionary sense; outside Tangut texts, it needs explanation.
Without Tangut font support, a real character can look like a missing glyph.
