Tangut Character 1742B

1068/6136

𗐫 is a historical Tangut character whose dictionary cross-reference is 過, roughly “pass,” “cross,” or “go through.” It belongs to a writing system for the Tangut language. Sent alone today, it is best read as a character sample or puzzle; the surrounding text decides the exact meaning. If it appears as a box, the app or font may not support it.

What 𗐫 means

It is glossed as “pass” or “cross” in a Tangut dictionary.

Tangut dictionary indexes connect 𗐫 with Li Fanwen’s entry L4795/#5533, glossed 過: passing, crossing, or going through. This is a historical translation aid, not a full modern sentence; the surrounding Tangut text determines the exact English reading.

Tangut writing does not mark word boundaries with spaces, so the role of one character depends on its word and sentence. If someone sends only 𗐫, treat it as a character sample and ask for the surrounding text before assigning a personal meaning.

Why was the Tangut script made?

It was made to write the Tangut language for a state.

The script was disseminated in 1036 under Li Yuanhao, ruler of Western Xia. Later accounts credit the court official Yeli Renrong, but authorship remains disputed. Its purpose was practical and political: Western Xia needed a writing system for its own language alongside Chinese.

The earliest securely dated Tangut document is the Record of the Guazhou Trial, from 1069 or 1070. Later material includes Buddhist books and Yuan-period printing; Buddhist memorial pillars at Baoding erected in 1502 show Tangut writing in religious and commemorative use. Researchers compare Tangut’s structure with Chinese, Khitan, and Jurchen scripts, but that does not make 𗐫 a borrowed Chinese character.

Why does 𗐫 show as a box?

Use a Tangut font or a viewer that supports Tangut.

𗐫 is a text character, so the font determines whether its shape appears. The Tangut IME’s current help warns that some mobile apps may fail to render Tangut text; its bundled fonts offer fallback coverage and different styles.

To enter it, a browser input method can accept a lookup code and show candidates. A Rime Xunpin layout supports phonetic, stroke, and four-corner input, and also needs a Tangut font. These are specialist input methods, not ordinary keyboard layouts.

It belongs to a historical writing system; in a modern message it reads as a Tangut text sample, not a casual reaction.

Without Tangut context, do not read its dictionary gloss as a personal message.
