What 𗐽 means
The Unicode label identifies the character, not its meaning.
One scholarly reconstruction gives *tshow¹, roughly a breathy “ts” followed by an “o-u” glide. This is a pronunciation, not a translation.
Why did Western Xia create Tangut writing?
Western Xia needed it for state and cultural writing. An imperial decree established Tangut writing for its court in 1036. Its Chinese-influenced forms recorded a separate language used in state and Buddhist texts.
After the Mongol conquest in the 13th century, the language left daily speech; manuscripts preserved its script.

1Why does 𗐽 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
