What 𗑟 means
“tshow” is a reconstructed reading, not a translation.
A radical index—an index that groups written characters by recurring parts—in Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary lists 𗑟 under the reconstructed reading “tshow.” It is a scholarly reading label, not a translation of the character’s meaning.
Why was Tangut written?
It gave the Western Xia state a script for its language.
The Tangut writing system was created around 1036 under the first Western Xia emperor. It was taught in government schools and used for official and diplomatic documents, Buddhist scriptures, Chinese classics, military works, and other books.
Surviving manuscripts include material from the 12th or early 13th century. After Western Xia fell to Mongol armies in 1227, Tangut continued in Yuan and Ming settings, including Buddhist and documentary texts, before becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty. Tangut was shaped in a Chinese writing environment, but the two scripts remained separate and mutually illegible.
Specialist and archival: it fits Tangut study, font testing, or a script sample, not an unexplained everyday message.
Treat “tshow” as a reconstructed reading, not a translation.
