What 𗑮 means

It is a Tangut character, but its label does not give a translation. A dictionary and sentence context are needed to identify its word value. A scholarly cross-index lists it under lookup identifiers L4901 and #301; these point to entries, not English meanings.

Tangut was created by imperial order around 1036 for Western Xia, a medieval state in what is now northwestern China. It served government writing and Buddhist scripture, a collected body of Buddhist teachings. Surviving books include Chinese and Tibetan translations, Confucian classics (works linked to Confucius), military texts, encyclopedias, and literature.

Neighboring Khitan states also had their own scripts, part of a regional practice of writing for state identity. Tangut uses structural principles also found in Chinese writing, but was not derived directly from Chinese characters. It remained in use under the Yuan and early Ming dynasties, later periods of rule in China, after Western Xia fell.

How do I type 𗑮?

Use a Tangut-capable input method for repeated typing. A dictionary-based method lets you enter a code and choose the matching character from its candidates.

Tangut IME Online requires a compatible RIME dictionary before showing code-based candidates; as of 2026, that is the tool's documented setup.

Why does 𗑮 look blank?

A blank box usually means the font has no Tangut glyph. The character has a text identity, while the font draws its visible outline. Tangut sources preserve some glyph variants, so outlines can differ without indicating a different character.

Use it for Tangut-script study or specialist text; limited font support can keep others from reading it.

Don't rely on it for urgent instructions; a reader without Tangut font support may see a blank box.

1

Why does 𗑮 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
