What 𗒜 means
Its Unicode name identifies the character, not its Tangut reading.
“Tangut Ideograph-1749C” is an algorithmic label built from the code point. A Tangut dictionary entry or the surrounding sentence is needed to tell what word 𗒜 writes.
Why was the Tangut script made?
It was created to write the Tangut language in Western Xia.
The script’s starting point is about 1036 CE, under Western Xia’s first emperor. Tangut was a historical language of northwestern China; its writing served official records, private documents, Buddhist sutras, inscriptions, and manuscripts.
After Western Xia fell to the Mongols, Tangut writing continued in texts of the Yuan and Ming dynasties. The script was obsolete by the end of Ming.
Why isn't 𗒜 a Chinese character?
It belongs to the separate script made for the Tangut language.
Tangut was a historical language spoken in northwestern China. Its square forms and vertical columns can look familiar from Chinese writing, but that resemblance does not make 𗒜 readable as Chinese. A similar-looking Chinese character would be a different character.
Historical and specialist; the tone of 𗒜 depends on the Tangut word and sentence around it.
A square shape does not make it readable as Chinese.
