Tangut character 𗒢

1187/6136

In Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary, 𗒢 means “bell.” The Xixia (Western Xia) script was created around 1036 under its first emperor, probably to write Tangut, support Buddhist texts and distinguish the state from Song China. It was inspired by Chinese writing, not derived from it; Khitan scripts came earlier. After Western Xia fell in 1227, it continued under the Yuan and Ming in Buddhist works and texts translated from Chinese before becoming obsolete.

What 𗒢 means

Your font may not include Tangut characters.

The dictionary’s “bell” gloss gives the meaning, but the Xixia glyph still needs a Tangut-capable font; otherwise, your app may show a missing-character box.

This is a historical Tangut character, not an emoji reaction; “bell” is a dictionary gloss.

Don’t assume the “bell” gloss explains why someone sent it.

1

Why does 𗒢 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
