What 𗒣 means

𗒣 is a Tangut character with a reconstructed reading.

A scholarly transcription records its reconstructed Tangut reading as bih². This Latin-letter notation gives a syllable's sound, with the superscript 2 marking its second tone category; it is not an English translation. Its meaning in a passage depends on the surrounding Tangut words. Tangut is a distinct historical script, not Chinese characters drawn in a different style.

The Tangut script was created around 1036 CE for the Tangut language under Western Xia rule. It served government, diplomacy, and schooling, as well as Buddhist translations, inscriptions, and manuscripts. After Western Xia fell, Tangut writing continued under Yuan rule in Buddhist printings and multilingual stone inscriptions. The script later fell out of use, and surviving texts became subjects of language study.

Why does 𗒣 show as a box?

A font without Tangut coverage cannot draw it.

Rendering is font-dependent: a font with Tangut coverage may show the character, while an unsupported one can show a blank, square, or fallback mark. Fonts may draw the same encoded character with slightly different outlines; its identity stays the same.

Enter U174A3 through an editor or input method that supports hexadecimal Unicode entry. Display still depends on whether the selected font contains Tangut glyphs.

Historical and specialized; suited to Tangut text, scholarly notes, or font testing.

Don't infer a Chinese word from its shape; Tangut is a separate script.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗒣 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
