What 𗒶 means
Read it as part of a Tangut word.
The sequence 𗠝𗗆𗒶 transcribes 阿僧祇, a Buddhist term meaning “numberless” or “incalculable.” The full term carries that sense.
Is 𗒶 Chinese?
No. It belongs to Tangut, a separate script.
Tangut script was created around 1036 CE under Western Xia’s first emperor to write the Tangut language in what is now northwestern China. Its design drew on Chinese writing, and it helped Western Xia mark a distinct state identity.
It appeared in official and Buddhist texts. After Western Xia fell, the script remained in use under Yuan and Ming rule, becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.
