Tangut Ideograph-174C1

1218/6136

𗓁 is a character in the Tangut script, the writing system used by the Western Xia state. Its catalog name identifies the entry but does not translate the character; read it in Tangut text or consult a Tangut dictionary. In one documented written combination it comes before 𗱈, the Tangut character for “tiger.” That does not make 𗓁 itself mean “tiger.”

What 𗓁 means

It is a Tangut character, not an English gloss.

The catalog name identifies the entry, but not the word or sound it represents. Read the character in surrounding Tangut text or consult a Tangut dictionary.

Tangut writing was created around 1036 as Western Xia established its own written culture. It served state purposes and carried Buddhist scripture and translations of Chinese and Tibetan works. After the state fell, surviving Tangut writing is chiefly encountered in manuscripts and historical study.

Historical and specialist: Tangut survives chiefly in historical texts and study.

If 𗓁 appears as an empty box, the font may lack Tangut coverage.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗓁 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
