Tangut character 𗓙

1242/6136

𗓙 is a Tangut character meaning “to hit.” Its recorded example appears in a phrase translated as “a hundred shots and a hundred hits.” A Tangut manuscript also describes the character’s parts; that note explains its shape, not its meaning.

Text symbol

What 𗓙 means

It means “to hit” in Tangut.

Reference sources gloss it as “to hit.” It appears in the recorded phrase 𘊝𘎟𘊝𗓙, translated as “a hundred shots and a hundred hits.” The pair 𘎟𗓙 alone is not attested as a word.

Tangut script was commissioned in 1036 by Emperor Li Yuanhao for the Western Xia state. Its aims included producing a Tangut Buddhist canon and establishing a distinct state identity. Tangut writing was visually and structurally inspired by Chinese writing, but did not derive from it; neighboring Khitan peoples had created two scripts about a century earlier. The Tangut homophones reference that records this character is linked to a source manuscript with a colophon, or closing note, dated 1188.

Why does 𗓙 look different or show as a box?

Font coverage decides whether it appears and how it is drawn.

As of 2026, browsers and apps may show a box or replacement glyph if their available fonts lack Tangut. Fonts with Tangut support can still draw the same character in different styles.

It reads as historical Tangut writing; without surrounding Tangut, the isolated character gives only the gloss “to hit.”

As of 2026, a box usually means the available font lacks this Tangut glyph.

Why is 𗓙 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
