Text symbol

What 𗓱 means

It introduces a condition, usually translated as “if.” A Tangut translation of a rule begins with it: “If it is not done, then it will be judged according to the rules.”

The Tangut script was created around 1036 under Western Xia’s first emperor. The state used it for official writing and Buddhist translations, with a written identity distinct from Song China. Tangut design drew on Chinese writing and on script-making among the neighboring Khitan people, but it is a separate script.

After Western Xia fell, Tangut texts continued through the Yuan and Ming periods, and the script fell out of use by the end of the Ming. As of 2026, no secure first-use date is assigned to 𗓱 itself.

In Tangut texts, 𗓱 is a grammatical conjunction that sets up a condition.

A box means the current font or app cannot draw Tangut; the Unicode text may still be intact.

Does 𗓱 have one fixed pronunciation?

No. Tangut pronunciation is reconstructed, and the systems differ. An older transcription gives tjij¹, while a system published in 2025 gives te¹. These are technical spellings of reconstructed sounds, not a settled modern pronunciation.

Why is 𗓱 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
