Tangut Character 174F8

1273/6136

𗓸 is a Tangut character whose dictionary gloss is “perhaps.” The Tangut script belonged to the Western Xia state and appears in government, Buddhist translations, and literature. Tang-galog, a Tagalog syllabary, reuses the glyph with a different syllable value, so the surrounding context changes how to read it.

What 𗓸 means

A Tangut dictionary index glosses it as “perhaps.” That gloss is a reading aid, not enough to make the character a clear one-symbol message.

The Western Xia court commissioned Tangut writing in 1036 as part of building a distinct state culture. Tangut texts served government and learning; surviving works include Buddhist translations, Confucian texts, encyclopedias, military treatises, and literature.

A Tangut manuscript from Khara-khoto is dated to the 12th or early 13th century.

Why does 𗓸 look Chinese?

Tangut borrowed Chinese-style structure, but 𗓸 is Tangut. Tangut characters have a square, complex form influenced by Chinese writing. The Western Xia also followed neighboring Khitan states in creating a state script; that broad influence does not make this glyph a Chinese character or a direct Khitan copy.

On 31 August 2025, Omniglot described Tang-galog, a Tagalog syllabary using Tangut glyphs. In its sample, 𗓸 has a Tagalog syllable value rather than its historical Tangut reading.

Historical and specialist; at home in a Tangut text, dictionary, or script study.

Alone, it will not reliably tell someone “perhaps.”
