What 𗓽 means
It is read as “lo,” not “Arhat.”
Scholars reconstruct the Tangut reading of 𗓽 as ¹lo₁. In 𗓽𘂦, it forms part of an attested Tangut word for an arhat, an awakened Buddhist practitioner. In 𘉒𗺹𗓽𘀺, it spells “lo” in a Tangut phonetic rendering of Sanskrit mahoraga, a serpent-like Buddhist protector. “Arhat” translates the whole word, not 𗓽 alone.
Is 𗓽 Chinese writing?
No. Tangut is a separate writing system.
The Tangut script was created around 1036 under Xixia (Western Xia), a Tangut-led state, to write Tangut. It is separate from Chinese writing despite the visual resemblance. Tangut writing continued through the Yuan and Ming dynasties before becoming obsolete; scholars reconstruct its readings from surviving texts.
