Tangut Character 175DF

1504/6136

𗗟 is a Tangut grammatical character, represented in scholarly reconstruction as ·jij¹ and commonly described as a future marker. It points to an event as future-oriented, though the exact force depends on the sentence. Tangut dictionaries and manuscripts preserve its use.

What 𗗟 means

It marks a future-oriented event in Tangut. Scholars represent its reconstructed Tangut reading as ·jij¹. It belongs to sentence grammar: it places an event ahead of the relevant time rather than naming an object or feeling.

A 2024 study keeps the future-marker gloss but argues that some examples may be prospective—looking toward an outcome—or telic, directed toward an endpoint. “Future marker” is the useful short answer; the sentence settles the finer force.

Where did the Tangut script begin?

The Tangut court commissioned it in 1036 under Li Yuanhao. The script supported a political identity distinct from Song China and a Tangut Buddhist canon, a collection of authoritative scriptures. It also carried translated Chinese, Tibetan, and secular works.

The earliest surviving Tangut document is an official record dated 1072. The Sea of Writing, a monolingual Tangut rhyming dictionary from the 12th century, includes 𗗟. A manuscript index identifies it as L1101, gives the reconstructed reading ·jij, and records a Tibetan gloss written gyie.

Tangut writing outlasted the state: an inscription from 1502 documents continued use after its fall. The character’s record is linguistic and documentary; the debate is about how strongly it marks futurity.

What if someone sends 𗗟 to me?

Treat it as historical Tangut text, not a standalone message. If it arrives alone, ask which passage it came from: this is a grammatical marker, and the rest of the sentence determines its force.

A reader trained in Tangut may recognize the reconstructed form ·jij¹; other readers may identify only the script without context. Ask for the passage before translating it.

Specialist and historical: it belongs in Tangut language or manuscript contexts, not as a general-purpose sign for “later.”

Its future sense belongs to Tangut grammar; don’t use it as a standalone sign for “later.”

Questions people ask

2

Why does 𗗟 show as a box?

Your current font or app lacks Tangut glyph coverage. Choose a font that includes the script; the character can be present even when it cannot be drawn.

Can 𗗟 mean more than future?

Yes. Some analyses read examples as prospective or endpoint-focused. Translate the surrounding Tangut sentence rather than forcing one English gloss.
