What 𗗠 means
Its Unicode label identifies the character, not its Tangut word. “Tangut Ideograph-175E0” is an inventory label, not a translation of the historical word represented by 𗗠. To identify that word in a passage, use the surrounding text or look up the character in a Tangut dictionary. Tangut is a distinct writing system developed under Chinese influence; this character is Tangut, not Chinese.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It gave Western Xia a script for government and cultural life. The Tangut script was developed for Western Xia during 1038–1227. It served government work and bilingual diplomacy, as well as Buddhist translations and printing. After the dynasty fell in 1227, written Tangut continued for centuries in religious texts and inscriptions before becoming mainly a subject of historical and linguistic study. This history describes the script's changing role; it does not establish a change in 𗗠's meaning.
Why does 𗗠 show as a box?
A box usually means the font lacks Tangut coverage. The selected font must include Tangut glyphs to display this text character. Otherwise, an app may show a box or another missing-character marker. A Tangut-capable font can make the glyph visible, but it cannot identify the historical word.
A historical Tangut text character; its word depends on the passage or a dictionary.
The inventory label is not a translation.
