What 𗗣 means
It means “buy” in Tangut.
A Tangut dictionary index records bji; comparative work writes *lwəʶ², a reconstructed reading. These are scholarly spellings, not English pronunciation guides.
Why was Tangut writing made?
The Western Xia state commissioned a script for Tangut.
Around 1036–1037, it drew on Chinese and Khitan writing; Khitan was another historical script. It served Buddhist translations, legal texts, law codes, and official records, then became a subject of historical study.
Historical Tangut text: 𗗣 belongs to the writing tradition of Western Xia.
Is 𗗣 Chinese? No; it is Tangut, a separate script despite its visual resemblance.
