Tangut character 𗗺

𗗺 is a Tangut character for “wolf.” Introduced in 1036 under Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao, Tangut writing supported state-building and a distinct Tangut identity; it also recorded Buddhist texts and Chinese works translated into Tangut. Tangut rulers followed their neighbors, the Khitan people, who created scripts earlier; Tangut script was inspired by Chinese writing but stayed distinct. A Buddhist monument with Tangut writing is dated 1502, well after the state fell.
