Text symbol

What 𗘇 means

It records the Chinese word in Tangut writing. One reconstruction gives its Tangut reading as [tsiu], rather than the modern Chinese pronunciation of 猪.

Tangut writing was created around 1036 for the Western Xia state and Buddhist translations. Chinese and Khitan writing influenced it; Khitan was another language of the region, while this script was designed for the Tangut language. It remained in use through the Yuan and Ming periods before falling out of use. A font without Tangut coverage may show 𗘇 as a box.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗘇 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
