tangut ideograph-1762f

Tangut character 1762F

1584/6136

𗘯 is a Tangut character, but the glyph alone does not tell you which word or sound it represents. Today it is mainly encountered in scholarly or typographic references; its catalog identifier points to a dictionary entry, not an English translation. The Tangut script became official under the Western Xia state in 1036 and continued in manuscripts long after.

What 𗘯 means

Its word value depends on Tangut context.

The Unicode proposal identifies its dictionary entry as LFW2008-0205. Li Fanwen compiled the dictionary; 0205 is an index, not an English gloss. BabelStone's English index puts the entry in a group labelled “transliteration,” a use category rather than a translation of 𗘯.

Tangut writing recorded an extinct language, so one character on its own cannot establish which word or sound it carried in a particular text. The surrounding word or sentence matters.

Why did the Tangut script exist?

The Tangut script entered official use in 1036 under Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao. The state supported a Tangut Buddhist canon—the collection of Buddhist scriptures—and a written identity distinct from China's Song dynasty.

Tangut writing served more than religious texts. Manuscripts from Khara-Khoto preserve Buddhist works, Chinese translations, law codes, works of Confucian teaching, military writing, and literature. Surviving inscriptions reach 1502 and include monuments from the Yuan and Ming dynasties.

The Tangut and Khitan scripts are connected through state history: Tangut rulers followed the earlier Khitan example of creating a state script. Tangut forms drew on Chinese writing, but the script was not derived directly from Chinese, and its characters do not map one-to-one onto Chinese characters.

What does it mean if someone sends it?

Without context, it identifies a Tangut character, not its intended word.

Treat it as a text sample or reference. The surrounding sentence or the sender's source is needed to identify the intended word or sound.

It reads as a historical-script text sample; without context, its Tangut word value is not apparent.

Don't guess a translation from the glyph alone.

Why is 𗘯 a box?

It can be. The app needs a font with Tangut coverage to draw the glyph; a box or fallback mark means the font is missing, not that the encoded character changed.
