What 𗚥 means
Its dictionary gloss is “ailanthus,” a tree. Scholars reconstruct its reading, written in Latin letters as ɣor.
Tangut writing was created around 1036 under Western Xia’s first emperor to serve the state, mark political identity, and support a Tangut Buddhist canon—a collection of Buddhist scriptures. It remained in use through the Yuan and Ming periods, then became obsolete by the end of Ming.
Some Tangut forms reflect Chinese character structure; that is script-level influence, not a Chinese identity for 𗚥. The Khitan people also developed a script, a historical parallel rather than a link between individual characters.
