What does 𗛈 mean?
Its dictionary gloss is “to rise.”
𗛈 is a character in the Tangut script, a writing system used by the Tangut people and the Western Xia state. The gloss gives a recorded sense of the character; it does not tell you why someone used it in a message.
Under Western Xia's first emperor, the Tangut script was created around 1036 to support state administration and a Buddhist canon—a collection of sacred Buddhist writings—and to distinguish Western Xia from Song China. Its forms drew visual inspiration from Chinese and Khitan writing, while Tangut remained a distinct script. It carried Buddhist translations alongside secular works, official and private documents, inscriptions, and manuscripts. Tangut writing continued into the Yuan and Ming periods and became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.
