What 𗛘 means
Its reading and meaning come from Tangut context.
𗛘 is a Tangut character, but its Unicode label is a number rather than a translation. Identify its reading in a Tangut dictionary and check the surrounding Tangut text; its shape alone is not enough.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It served Western Xia's government and religious life.
Western Xia was a state that developed a written form of the Tangut language; the script entered use in 1036. Historical accounts credit Emperor Li Yuanhao with the basic design and court official Yeli Renrong with developing it, while another account credits Li's father. Some accounts emphasize Buddhist translation and literacy; another interpretation sees the court's new script as a claim to political autonomy from Song China and the neighboring Khitan state. Tangut texts include Buddhist scripture, translated Chinese works, Confucian classics, encyclopedias, military treatises, and literature.
After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued in administrative documents and Buddhist inscriptions. As of 2026, the latest known dated example is a Buddhist pillar from 1502.
Is 𗛘 a Chinese character?
No; it belongs to a separate writing system.
Tangut writing was visually inspired by Chinese characters, but the systems represent different languages and are mutually illegible. Scholars have also proposed influence from Khitan writing.
𗛘's recorded structure contains 𘡩 above 𘠣, 𘠌, and 𘤄. These components describe how the Tangut character is built; they do not supply a Chinese meaning.
A specialist historical character; an isolated use needs Tangut context.
Don't infer a Chinese meaning from its parts.
