What 𗛥 means
𗛥 means “chisel” in Tangut.
The script was commissioned in 1036 by Li Yuanhao, ruler of Western Xia (Xixia), to support state-building and create a Tangut edition of the Buddhist canon, a large collection of scriptures. Its forms were inspired by Chinese writing, but the script did not derive from Chinese. The word written with 𗛥 was borrowed from the Chinese word written 鑿, also meaning “chisel.” Tangut was widely used from 1036 to 1502 for Buddhist texts, Chinese classics, and translations of Chinese and Tibetan works.

Questions people ask
2Does the Unicode name tell me what 𗛥 means?
No. Unicode automatically builds “Tangut Ideograph-176E5” from the script name and the character’s code number; it identifies the glyph rather than translating it.
Why does 𗛥 appear as a square?
The selected font usually lacks Tangut coverage. A font with Tangut support can display the glyph; the character stored in the text is unchanged.
