What 𗛪 means
Breadth or open country.
The raised ¹ marks tone in the reconstructed reading. In a Tangut translation of a Chinese military text, gjiw ’o means “lords of the steppes”; gjiw evokes open country.
Is 𗛪 a Chinese character?
No. It belongs to the separate Tangut script.
The Xixia court used Tangut to write its language and translate Buddhist texts. Commissioned in 1036 under Li Yuanhao, the script drew on Chinese writing; the neighboring Khitan kingdom’s earlier scripts offered a regional model.
Tangut books, especially Buddhist works, continued under Yuan rule after Western Xia fell to Mongols in 1227.
