Tangut Character 176F1

1778/6136

𗛱 is a Tangut character with no established one-word English gloss. A study links its reconstructed reading to a possible place name, so a lone message is best treated as a reference to Tangut writing until context clarifies it. A box on screen can mean the font lacks Tangut glyphs.

What 𗛱 means

No settled one-word gloss is established. A 2018 study reconstructs a Tangut reading and suggests that 𗛱 may transcribe a place name; this is a contextual interpretation, not a settled English translation.

For 𗛱 vs 𗛰, compare the lower-left component. The study records 𗛰 being miswritten as 𗛱, then distinguishes the forms: 𗛰 is the Tangut numeral for three and contains 𘢌 there, while 𗛱 contains 𘢋.

Why is 𗛱 hard to translate?

The script began as a state project. Tangut writing was created in 1036 to support Western Xia state-building, Buddhist canon production—the collection of sacred Buddhist texts—and a distinct state identity. It also carried translations of Chinese works and texts from Tibetan.

A Tangut manuscript associated with the Khara-Khoto site is dated to the 12th or early 13th century, and Tangut sources continue after Western Xia fell in 1227.

What does it mean when someone sends 𗛱?

A lone character needs its source. If someone sends 𗛱 alone, ask which text or source they mean before translating it.

If the conversation is about Western Xia, Khara-Khoto, or Tangut Buddhist texts, the historical writing is probably the point. During font testing, a box is a display issue, not part of the character's meaning.

Specialist and archival; in everyday chat, treat it as a reference to Tangut writing unless its source is clear.

Don't read it as “three”: that reading belongs to the lookalike 𗛰.

Why does 𗛱 show as a box?

Font coverage. A font without Tangut glyphs falls back to a missing-glyph box; 𗛱 itself has not changed.
