What 𗛸 means
A Tangut dictionary gives the gloss “burnt.”
That is one character’s dictionary meaning, not a translation of a full message; if someone sent it alone, it does not reveal what they intended.
Why does Tangut writing look Chinese?
Its square forms follow Chinese models but write Tangut.
The script was created around 1036 to write Tangut, the language of the Western Xia kingdom in what is now northwestern China. Adopting a state script also marked the kingdom’s distinct cultural identity. It appears in official records, private writing and Buddhist books from the Western Xia period. It remained in use under the Yuan and Ming after Western Xia fell, then became obsolete by the end of the Ming.
