What 𗜁 means
𗜁 is a Tangut word meaning “to have.” A scholarly transcription records its reading as ndźo.
The Western Xia court created the Tangut script around 1036 under Emperor Li Yuanhao. It was the writing system for the Tangut language, used for government and to set the state’s identity apart from Song China. It also carried translations of Buddhist scripture, laws, military works, literature and personal writing.
Tangut’s square forms drew on Chinese writing, and its creation also followed the example of neighboring Khitan scripts. Tangut is a distinct script for the Tangut language. It remained in use during the Yuan and Ming dynasties, then fell out of use by the end of the Ming. Scholars rediscovered it in the late 19th century.
Why does 𗜁 show as a box?
The app cannot draw the character with its available font. As of 2026, a box can indicate that the text still contains 𗜁 but the app has no Tangut font to display it.
As of 2026, a browser may load Noto Serif Tangut as a web font, while a desktop or mobile app may need a Tangut font installed where it can access it. Different fonts can draw 𗜁 differently without changing which character the text contains.
As of 2026, Tangut is mainly studied in historical and scholarly contexts; in chat, 𗜁 reads as a deliberate script reference, not a standard reaction.
Without a Tangut font, the recipient may see a box instead of the word.

2Why is 𗜁 a box on my phone?
It is a font issue. The text can still contain 𗜁, but the app needs a Tangut font it can use to draw it.
Is 𗜁 a Chinese character?
No. Chinese writing influenced Tangut’s visual style, but Tangut is a separate script for a separate language.
