Tangut character 𗜊

1803/6136

𗜊 is a Tangut character glossed as “fear.” The Tangut script served the Western Xia state and continued in Buddhist works and inscriptions. Its Unicode name is only a catalog label; the glyph alone does not show how the word fits into a sentence.

What 𗜊 means

A Tangut reference glosses it as “fear.”

A gloss is a brief guide to a word’s meaning, not a full translation. The word’s precise sense and role depend on the surrounding Tangut sentence.

Why does 𗜊 resemble Chinese writing?

Its square, stroke-based style resembles Chinese characters, but it writes Tangut.

The Tangut script was promulgated in 1036 for the Tangut language of Western Xia. It served government and schools, and translators produced Buddhist works in it.

Surviving sources include manuscripts, inscriptions, printed books, and Buddhist texts; major collections preserve material from the late twelfth century onward. After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued in later imperial and religious settings. The latest known examples are Buddhist stone pillars at Baoding dated 1502.

What does 𗜊 mean when someone sends it?

The gloss is “fear”; the sender’s purpose is unclear without context.

Alone, it could name fear, quote a historical text, or refer to Tangut writing; one glyph cannot tell you which. Ask for the surrounding words or the sender’s intended reading before inferring their mood.

If you use it in ordinary chat, add a plain explanation or a sentence around it; otherwise it may read as an unexplained historical word.

A historical Tangut word: precise in a text, opaque as an unexplained standalone message.

The gloss “fear” does not prove the sender is reporting their mood.
