tangut ideograph-17722

Tangut character

1827/6136

𗜢 is a Tangut character, but its meaning and pronunciation remain uncertain: reconstructed readings disagree as of 2026. Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao ordered Tangut script in 1036 to strengthen the state and create a Tangut edition of Buddhist scripture. Tangut was distinct from Chinese, though its character design drew on Chinese writing; Khitan neighbors also provided an example of creating their own scripts. Surviving Tangut texts include Chinese translations.

Why does 𗜢 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
